A woman has been killed after a serious crash on the A69 last night.

Just before 6.30pm emergency services rushed to a collision near Haydon bridge.

The crash was between a blue Ford Focus estate and a blue Hyundai I30 who were travelling in opposite directions.

Police have arrested a 31-year-old man, who was driving the Ford Focus, for dangerous driving and is currently in police custody.

A 21-year-old woman who was a rear seat passenger in the Ford Focus was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 62-year-old woman, was also taken to hospital for treatment and she is not believed to have suffered any serious injuries.

Sergeant Craig Bartle, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: "This was a multi-vehicle collision that has resulted in a number of injuries and sadly a woman has lost her life.

"We are still carrying out enquiries this morning to formally identify the victim and inform her next of kin.

"An investigation to establish exactly what has happened will continue but we have arrested a man on suspicion of dangerous driving and he remains in custody.

"We need to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone who saw the Ford Focus in the area earlier that evening, is asked to call the police.

"The vehicle is believed to have been in Newcastle earlier in the evening before it travelled west on the A69.

“We are also particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident."

The A69 was closed for more than seven hours so officers could carry out their investigations but it has since been re-opened.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has information that may assist police, should call officers on 101.
