GIANT underpants will be paraded proudly as climate change protesters air their concerns about a multi-million improvement project planned for the A69.

Members of Extinction Rebellion Tynedale have made underwear-shaped banners for their Underpants to the Underpass protest, which will take place in front of Hexham Abbey on Saturday between 10am and midday.

The protesters are campaigning against Highways England’s proposals to build an underpass on the A69 at the Bridge End roundabout in Hexham.

Campaigner Steve Ridd said: “We will be having all the pants out and holding a ‘die-in’, representing the people who have felt, and may yet feel, the effects of the climate emergency.

“We are linking our underpants to the development of the roundabout on the A69, the link being the increase in road transport that development will bring. We need to keep fossil fuels in the ground, not release them.

“We want to increase people’s awareness of the climate emergency and want more members of Extinction Rebellion Tynedale to work together to challenge the climate crisis.” The next meeting of Extinction Rebellion Tynedale will take place on August 27 at the Tannery pub, in Hexham, at 7.30pm.
