THE recent heatwave has been good for business for a Haltwhistle sandwich shop.

Jethros, on Market Square, has been thriving due to owner Donna Maxwell’s home-made ice cream.

Flavours such as Mars Bar and Biscoff have been driving customers through the doors of the shop, which is just about to celebrate a year of trading.

Donna said: “Things are going really well. People love the shop.

“With the recent heatwave our little sandwich shop has been bustling with patrons after a cool down.

“We wanted something different and home-made ice cream has been going down a storm.

“My husband is an accountant, but he loves to cook and bake. He said if we were going to do ice cream, we were going to do it properly.

“We started off with hope that it would be a small hit with our locals, but it has expanded and now people love coming to Jethros for not only our slush and coffee but our ice cream too.

“We’ve gone from a simple sandwich place to a unique little eatery.”

But it hasn’t all been plain sailing – in January, Donna’s business was rocked by a flood. Her insurance company said the shop could be closed for up to a year, but her hard work saw Jethros reopen in April.

Donna continued: “We were closed due to a flood from January to April.

“I thought we would take a hit being closed for so long, but we were open again in time for the walking season starting.”
