PUPILS at two Tynedale schools were treated to a special visitor last week after two eleven year olds raised more than £1,000 for charity.

Newcastle United Football Club’s mascot, known as Maggie Magpie, dropped in on Greenhead and Henshaw primary schools.

Maggie’s visit came after Greenhead pupil Imogen Nolan, and her friend Chloe Makepeace, who goes to Henshaw raised £1,100 for the Newcastle United Foundation.

The foundation, which uses football to encourage learning and promote healthy lifestyles, has worked in both schools before in a bid to get more youngsters into sport.

The girls organised a fair and a raffle at Bardon Mill Village Hall in May to raise the money, and handed over the cheque to Maggie in person.

The pair even wrote to local businesses to ask for donations, ending up with an impressive set of prizes.
