TYNEDALE children left a message of tolerance in the sand when they took part in a charity sandcastle competition last week.

Youngsters from Highfield Middle School entered Children North East’s 25th annual Sandcastle Challenge on Friday, July 5, under the name The Heroic Highfielders.

The theme for this year’s Sandcastle Challenge, held at Sandhaven Beach in South Shields, was Build A New World and Highfield’s entry focused on a LGBTQ+ theme.

Staff from the Sitel group in Newcastle worked with the Highfield pupils on their design. The castle featured rainbow-coloured fish made in their citizenship lessons to represent how they see themselves.

Teacher Siobhan Moore said: “We decided to do this to show that love is love and so the children could say that all people should be treated equally.”
