I WRITE in response to your article of July 4, headlined ‘Councillors say no to Queen’s Monument’.

Firstly, this gives the misleading impression that Her Majesty the Queen has approved the ‘Elizabeth Landmark’.

As far as I am aware, the Queen has not been approached for her approval or otherwise.

Secondly, it implies that the councillors on the strategic planning committee were in some way rejecting the idea of honouring the Queen and Commonwealth. This is not the case.

The application was refused purely and simply on the grounds that the design and location were mutually inappropriate.

The pressure group, Keep the Wannies Wild, was formed with the aim of opposing this application.

They believe that Cold Law, a beautiful, wild, remote spot, is not a suitable location for such an invasive and industrial piece of art.
