A MAN has appeared in court charged with causing the death of a woman by dangerous driving.

Andrew Reed (27) of Westmatcott Street, Hexham, appeared at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

He faced one count of causing death by dangerous driving, as well as one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and one count of committing an act with the intent of perverting the course of justice.

The charges relate to an incident on June 25, 2018, when Isabel Gilchrist was killed following a collision on the C200 near Kielder. Daniel Gilchrist was also seriously injured in the crash.

It is alleged that Reed was driving a Scania Tipper lorry dangerously on the road which caused the crash. He is accused of then removing the vehicle from the scene and changing a defective tyre.

He appeared alongside John Clark (73), of Brieley Gardens, Otterburn, and Nicholas Clark (41), of Middleburn Farm, Simonburn, who are both charged with perverting the course of justice.

Both are accused of concealing a defective vehicle from police following the accident.

The men were released on unconditional bail and the cases were committed to Newcastle Crown Court, with a date set for August 8.
