The A69 between Newcastle and Carlisle is closed in both directions after a crash involving a lorry and a car.
Northumbria Police have closed the road after a crash just after 2pm.
The crash happened close to Bardon Mill, which is near Hexham.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 2.12pm today July 9, police received a report of a collision between a car and a lorry on the A69 near Bardon Mill.
"Emergency services are in attendance and the road has been closed in both directions."
North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 2.09pm to a road traffic collision. We deployed three Hazardous Area Response Teams and a double crewed ambulance.
"We have also requested the support of the air ambulance."
