A TRIATHLETE from Hexham has been given an award to celebrate her achievements.

Twelve-year-old Emily Carney was given a Stars Award from the Children’s Foundation.

The award celebrates the achievements of children in the North-East with a disability.

Emily, who suffers from muscle wasting condition Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) competed in triathlons from a young age, before switching from mainstream sport to disability sports. She was nominated by her triathlon trainer. Emily said: “I knew I’d been nominated but I didn’t know why. I was surprised to win.”

Her mum, Kirsty, added: “I’m very proud of her. She finds a lot of things difficult, but she does it all with a smile.”
