A WEEKEND of sunshine contributed to shining success for events held across the district.

Wylam Summer Fair took place on Saturday, with visitors and locals flocking to browse the craft and artisan food sellers as well a variety of charity stalls.

Everything from a Great Wylam Tree Party tree decorating competition to tug-of-war and egg hoying kept visitors busy on the day, with the event raising money to develop and maintain Wylam’s Jubilee Field.

The fair was opened by Ken John BEM and village residents Angus and Janet Palmer, Una Cowell, Emily Argent and Harry Robson, and locals and visitors enjoyed entertainment provided by Wylam Singers, Prudhoe Community Band, Tyne Valley Voices and Scottish Dancers. For the first time, there was also live action wrestling.

Meanwhile this year’s Bardon Mill and Henshaw Children’s Carnival, held on Saturday, has been hailed as the best yet by organisers.

The carnival has become a firm fixture in the village’s calendar once again after being cancelled in 2007.

This year’s procession from the school to the sports field was led by Carnival Queen Annie Doody.

There was plenty for children to enjoy, from a 20ft-high inflatable dart board to a fancy dress competition and a dog show, while musical entertainment was provided by Emma Smith.

And people gathered on Catton village green on Saturday to enojy the annual village fair with children’s sports, a barbecue, ice creams, and a toddler soft play area.
