A HEXHAM group for toddlers and young children is celebrating four decades of bringing music to the community.

Music and Movement has been held at the Trinity Methodist Church on Beaumont Street for 40 years. The group introduces children to music and dance in a social setting.

Last Friday, founders Julie Singleton and Alice Emmerson returned to the group they set up in the 1970s. Alice said: “I was running a music and movement class in Jesmond, but I moved to Hexham.

“There was nothing like this at all. I’m a pianist so I wanted a dancer to help.

“I put an advert in the Courant and Julie was the only one who applied! We started off in my house because we didn’t know how many people would come. It’s such a good thing for kids.”

The group is currently ran by Sheelagh Jones and Julie Finch, who both became leaders after bringing their children.

Sheelagh is set to retire after 18 years at the helm. She will be replaced by new leader Evi Horrocks.

In celebration of their 40th anniversary, Music and Movement will be holding a picnic at the Sele on July 6. All past members are invited.
