BRIGHT sparks were celebrating being named the best chemistry students in the North-East.

A group of year 8 pupils at Corbridge Middle School returned from the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry, at Newcastle University, with the title of the region’s top performers.

Sophie Langlands, Olivia Bell, Thomas Astbury and Peter Cowley joined pupils from 16 other schools to compete in two practical tasks, held in an undergraduate laboratory within the university’s chemistry department.

The team took part in a challenge where they had to identify the missing element in a practical forensic investigation. This was followed by a timed challenge to produce the right volume of foam using a selection of different chemical substances. They scored perfect marks to receive the prize for first place.
