A Cumbrian design and building firm has appeared on TV programme Impossible Builds.

Retreat Homes - which is based at Kirkbride Airfield - appeared in the sixth episode of the More4 series, after it created a retreat to be installed in the Somerleyton Estate, in Norfolk.

The episode was supposed to air two years ago, but tragic circumstances meant the show was pulled.

Senior sales and design consultant at Retreat Homes, Wendy McKay, 42, explained: “Aidan Keane, the presenter, sadly passed away six or seven months after filming, so they had to find a new presenter.”

However, after almost two years, the fifth episode of the series was finally shown last Tuesday, with the episode featuring the Cumbrian firm airing this week.

“The whole premise of the show is impossible builds,” continued Mrs McKay.

The team created the 48ft x 22ft lodge structure in the Kirkbride factory, before then transporting it in two parts to the Somerleyton Estate for installation.

“We pulled our structure through the forest,” she said.

“We then created it at the place of the build.

“We couldn’t put bricks and mortar there, we just couldn’t do it.”

Welcoming the TV cameras was an experience for the team, and gave them an insight into what really goes on in television.

“It was great,” she said.

“It was a very early start of 6.30am, and we had a few days of filming - we even had a drone running through our factory.

“You don’t have any preparation for doing the filming though - when I was asked questions I just had to go off the cuff.

“You only speak to the presenters for two/three hours.”

In the factory the firm makes between eight and nine retreats at any one time, custom-made to the customer’s requirements. Once created, they can be transported to any location in the country.
