THE BELLINGHAM community has raised hundreds of pounds after vandals destroyed the first school’s garden area.

A GoFundMe page was set up by parents of pupils at the school and raised £305 to aid the cost of repairs and replace plants, compost and gardening tools.

The gardening area, owned by local gardeners Edwin and Pat Wilkinson, had its plants ripped up, compost bags torn and turned upside down. A school hall window was also damaged after a weight from the goal posts on the school field was thrown against it. It is believed the damage occurred between Monday, May 27 and Friday, May 31.

Headteacher of Bellingham First School, Wendy Goddard, said: “Pat and Edwin Wilkinson were thrilled to have these donations and it’s restored their faith in humankind. It was lovely to see Pat smiling again in the garden.”

Local worker Mark Robson rounded up Tynedale businesses Halls of Heddon, Down to Earth, Prudhoe West Primary School and Gary Davison and Eddie Wilkinson from West Wylam allotments in Prudhoe to help fund-raise.
