THE article headed ‘Calls for Brexit increase in the region’ in the May 30 edition of the Courant was short on critical journalism.

It neglected to mention that at the election, Brian Monteith, Brexit Party MEP, gave his principal place of residence as an address in France.

To the best of my knowledge, he has no connection with the North-East region.

It is a very sad indictment of a large section of voters that they have chosen to elect a man who was standing for a party with no declared policies apart from leaving the European Union, something over which MEPs have no influence.

Mr Monteith’s party is led Nigel Farage who has labelled the EU undemocratic despite having one of the the poorest voting attendance rates of any MEP.

He has also complained about the impact of the EU on UK fishing despite only attending one of 42 meetings when he a member of the EU fisheries committee.

Hopefully Mr Monteith will get the opportunity to serve his full five-year term as an MEP, become acquainted with his constituents, and develop an appreciation of the huge contribution which the EU makes to the economic and cultural life of our great region.
