A DEDICATED charity volunteer has been recognised for her work and commitment by Hexham Rotary Club.
Elspeth Straker from Corbridge has been awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship award, a recognition named after the founder of Rotary and which the club awards to people who have made a commitment to charity work or community activities.
Elspeth has been a volunteer for the Red Cross for 25 years and president for British Red Cross Northumbria since 2011.
In her role as president she has raised more than £100,000 by organising musical events, and on a more personal level she has abseiled off the Tyne bridge and zip lined across the River Tyne from the roof of the Baltic to raise money for the charity through sponsorship.
She said she was stunned to receive the recognition, which was awarded to her following a talk she gave for the Rotary club members.
Roy Dallison, president of Hexham Rotary Club, said: “It is not only the financial assistance we value but also her ability to inspire others to become involved in the Red Cross.
“She is a true friend of the Red Cross and her passion and commitment are outstanding.”
