HEXHAM’S MP Guy Opperman has joined a campaign group of Conservative MPs as a leadership contest looms.

Mr Opperman has joined the new “One Nation” group Tory MPs, who are aiming to push the party to the centre ground.

Around 60 MPs have joined the One Nation group, including Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd.

The One Nation Group set out a “declaration of values” on Monday, calling for bold reforms to welfare and vocational skills to tackle social injustice and create an “opportunity society.”

Mr Opperman said: “I believe very strongly that the future of Conservative politics, and all politics, is in the centre ground.

“The One Nation group of MP’s – of which I am a member – is firmly planted in the centre right of British politics.

“I believe the One Nation values of supporting free enterprise, protecting our environment, pro-Nato, investing in our public services and championing social mobility are values we should see put forward by all Conservatives across the party.”

Prime Minister Theresa May has promised to set out a timetable for the election of her successor after the next vote on her Brexit plan.

Under Conservative Party rules, two candidates are chosen by MPs to go forward to a ballot of party members.
