WORK to significantly improve one of Northumberland’s best performing leisure centres will get under way next month.
The second phase of a £700,000 investment programme at Wentworth Leisure Centre will start on June 3.
A new multi-functional gym will be installed, the changing areas will be upgraded and a new, modern reception area will be created during the work.
It is expected that the work will take eight weeks to complete, and gym equipment will be relocated into the centre’s sports hall during this period to enable members to continue using the service. The gym equipment will be out of use on June 1 and 2, however.
Mark Tweedie, chief executive of Active Northumberland, said: “This is a really exciting scheme which will benefit the residents of Hexham, local schools and all those living in the surrounding communities who use the facilities.
“The work will create a fresh, contemporary feel to the centre and the gym will be one of the best equipped in the North-East.”
The work has been financed by Northumberland County Council as part of its £65m countywide investment in sport and leisure facilities.
Northumberland County Councillor Cath Homer, cabinet member for leisure, said: “This investment is a fantastic boost for Hexham and will provide first class exercise facilities and services that will enhance the health and well-being of our community.”
