PROPOSALS to rejuvenate a vacant site in a prominent Hexham location have taken a step forward.

Formal planning applications from both HMC Group and McCarthy and Stone have recently been submitted to redevelop the former Workhouse site on Corbridge Road, opposite the current Hexham General Hospital.

HMC is seeking to demolish and refurbish buildings on the site to create a total of 32 flats and two houses, while McCarthy and Stone wants to create 53 apartments for elderly people with accompanied communcal facilities and car parking.

HMC's plans would see 26 two bedroom and six three bedroom apartments created, and a total of 30 one bedroom and 23 two bedroom apartments would be in place through the McCarthy and Stone development.

At a public consultation meeting held in March, there was strong support for the applications. However, there were some concerns over the height of the flats proposed by HMC.
