MORE elderly residents are to be thrown out of their homes by a local housing provider, it emerged this week.

In the wake of news that Karbon Homes was planning to demolish people’s homes in Prudhoe, residents in two other towns are now facing a similar fate.

A campaign has already started to save the bungalows at The Haven in Prudhoe, where some residents have lived for 40 years.

Prudhoe resident Lee Robinson has started a petition against the plans, following fierce opposition, which has gained 586 signatures in five days.

He said: “I decided to start a petition so that we can show Karbon at the consultation that these plans aren’t welcome – hopefully they will listen.”

Meanwhile residents in similar housing in Hexham and Haltwhistle have also received letters saying they had to move out.

Karbon Homes has said it wants to create seven new two and three-bedroom houses in Prudhoe, through the rent to buy scheme.

In Haltwhistle, 16 one-bedroom flats on Greenholme Road would be demolished to make way for for nine new three-bedroom homes for affordable rent, while in Hexham, 10 one-bedroom bungalows on Holmdale would be replaced with 10 two and three bedroom houses through the rent to buy scheme.

Jon McDonald from Karbon Homes, said: “We are very sorry for the disruption these projects will cause to our residents. We have met with each resident individually, and we are continuing to meet with them, to talk through their concerns and support them to identify suitable alternative homes where they would like to move.”

“They will all be properly compensated with a Home Loss Payment, and all their moving costs will be paid.

“There is no deadline set for this process – our residents will get all the time they need to find the right home for them.”

We are investing £3.8 million in regenerating three residential areas in Haltwhistle, Hexham and Prudhoe.

We are intending to invest £1.2m in creating nine new high quality homes on Greenholme Road in Haltwhistle, to meet the needs of local residents, especially families looking for affordable housing. The homes will be three bedroom houses available for Affordable Rent.

In Hexham, we are looking to invest £1.4m in ten new two to three bedroom houses on Maiden’s Walk, and in Prudhoe, we are embarking on a £1.2m scheme to create seven new two or three bedroom houses at The Haven. Both of these developments will offer affordable homes to customers through Rent to Buy.
