THUNDERSTORMS are expected to hit parts of Tynedale later today.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms between 1pm and 9pm on Wednesday.

Forecasters said thunderstorms may bring some temporary disruption to travel and power supplies, while there could be damage to buildings from lightning strikes.

Meanwhile the warning states that there is a chance that driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus, and flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible.

Although not everywhere will get one, heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out across central and northern England during Wednesday afternoon, easing from the south during the evening.

Areas including Allendale and Alston are being predicted to be hit by the storm.
