THERE has been calls for CCTV cameras to be installed in a Tynedale village following three burglaries before Christmas.
In December, Corbridge was targeted by burglars on three occasions with items taken from St Andrew’s Church, Kirsty Taylor Goldsmiths and Norma James womenswear shop.
Concerned resident Ian Wylie attended the latest Corbridge Parish Council meeting and he asked if the council could consider installing a number of CCTV cameras around the village to prevent similar incidents happening again.
Parish councillors said they would look into the matter and Inquire whether Northumbria Police had some old cameras no longer in use that they might be willing to sell on at discounted prices.
While Coun. Graham Curry hinted at the possibility of installing dummy cameras to act as a deterrent, Coun. Lee Stenhouse said it would be embarrassing for the village if a crime had been committed and no camera footage was available from the devices.
Mr Wylie agreed, and he said: “I think you are overcomplicating things for the sake of four cameras which would cover the entire village.
“The thousands spent on the cameras would be a small price to pay if something happens in the village.
“Rather that than Corbridge saying it had no cameras.”
