AN image of a rare lunar rainbow - known as a moonbow - has been captured over Alston.

Local photographer Andrew Hewison captured the rare phenomenon on Wednesday night, the first day of spring, much to the shock of local residents and weather watchers.

A moonbow occurs when a rainbow is produced by moonlight rather than sunlight.

Mr Hewison said he spotted the moonbow at 10pm as he took his dog for a walk.

He said: "I walked out my house and immediately knew it was something extraordinary. It was amazing to see."

Despite only taking up photography a few months ago, this image of the moonbow will live long in the memory.

"Alston has been known for its photogenic sunsets recently, and this is another great thing that's put the town on the map."
