A SOUTH African vet who now practises in the United Kingdom has been impressed at the high standards of veterinary care in this country.

Morne van Niekerk trained as an equine vet in South Africa, but in 2012 he made the move to Inverness, and in 2015 relocated to Northumberland to join Bearl Equine Clinic, where he specialises in orthopaedic investigations and veterinary surgery.

Dr van Niekerk said: “It’s was very interesting to come to the UK and learn how things are done over here; it’s quite a different environment to practise in. I’d say there’s about the same population of horses in both countries, but there are more vets who specialise in treating horses here. This means you have more opportunities to consult with colleagues.

“The UK is a world leader in veterinary care, which has been obvious to me since I arrived. It’s also not just the qualified vets, but the standard of education and ability of support staff is very impressive.

“Having access to more advanced technology is also a great advantage. Procedures like MRI and CT scanning, which are rarely used in South Africa, are routine to me now.”

Having lived in the UK for seven years, Morne has apparently also learned the key to British conversation – talking about the weather: “Of course, one of the biggest adjustments has been working through the British winter. I certainly never had to dig equipment out of the snow or had drugs freeze before I could administer them in Africa!”

Morne continues to hone his skills as vet and has completed a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practise in Orthopaedic Surgery. His future plans include studying for a similar qualification in operating on soft tissue injuries.

Morne said: “My goal throughout my career has always been the same: to simply be the best vet I can be.”

Michelle van Niekerk, Morne’s wife, is another of Bearl Equine Clinic’s qualified practitioners. Michelle’s focus is on equine reproduction, or as she describes it: “making more horses to keep Morne in a job.”

Both van Niekerks are also keen riders in their spare time. While Morne prefers to seek adventure on his mountain bike, Michelle takes her work home with her by competing in horse riding events, including cross-country, dressage, and show-jumping.

Alex Font, Veterinary Surgeon and Practice Director, said: “It’s been a pleasure to work with Morne and Michelle, and I hope they remain part of our team for many years to come.”
