CONTINUING uncertainty over Brexit has not had a significant impact on the district’s housing market.

That’s the word from Hexham estate agents Red Hot Property. Owner Gareth Jones explained why the North-East housing market had not experienced difficulties like those seen in the South.

Mr Jones said: “We haven’t seen a significant slowdown in terms of sales activity.

“The change is that there has been less coming on to the market, which ironically has kept the market going.

“The market in the South sees a lot of foreign investment, which is why there have been issues.

“Buyers are quite active at the minute, we have less available and lots of buyers.”

It comes after Prime Minister Theresa May wrote to Brussels on Wednesday seeking a extension to Article 50 until the end of June, after her Brexit deal was heavily defeated in the House of Commons for a second time.

MPs voted the deal down by 149 votes, and speaker John Bercow ruled that it could not go to parliament for a third time, unless substantial changes were made.

Despite this, Hexham MP Guy Opperman still believes Mrs May’s deal is the correct way forward.

Mr Opperman said: “The deal we have negotiated provides the certainty that our local business community needs. I continue to work cross party to get an agreed deal over the line and believe that the Prime Minister has worked tirelessly in the country’s best interest.”
