A THRIVING Cumbrian business is helping to transform the lives of householders by offering an ideal alternative to moving home, with a contemporary twist.

SBS Cumbria has recently moved to larger premises to meet the increased demand for its products, advice, and services.

A new factory, which is offering greater employment opportunities for the region, is producing a variety of Warmcore products as more owners plump for house makeovers rather than move.

Warm aluminium bifold, French and patio doors are proving a hit with residents who have decided to bring a touch of the outside in as part of the redevelopment of their homes.

Refurbishments are also seeing the increased popularity of sunrooms, conservatories and extensions, often with flat roofs and roof lanterns, adding open-plan living with a designer kitchen/dining room and sociable sitting areas.

Founded in 1994 in Kendal, SBS Cumbria originally specialised in uPVC windows. Today, it has branches in Carlisle, Kendal, Workington, Barrow, Hexham, and three in Scotland, employing 50 staff, as demand grows for its expertise.

On top of doors, windows and roof lanterns, fitted with advanced thermal glass, SBS also offers the latest cladding, soffits, facias and rainwater goods.

As well as manufacturing on site, the new 7,000sqft Carlisle unit boasts display areas showing a multitude of products customers need to transform their living environment.

SBS Cumbria Director John Charlton said: “Over the past 25 years we have managed to build up considerable expertise in our trade and can offer private and trade customers some sound advice on the best products to meet their needs, thereby ensuring best value.

“Many people are now thinking about extending and refurbishing to avoid the expense of moving house. Often they like where they live but need to remodel to provide extra space or bring their homes up to modern standards.

“We make and stock some tremendous products. People used to shy away from a flat roof when the only thing stopping the water coming in was a layer of felt. Today we have fibreglass flat roofs and roof lanterns which let nothing in but the light.

“The double or triple glazing helps keep the temperature just right and you can even have blinds fitted within the glass to keep them dust-free, which can be operated manually or electrically.”

Modern claddings of uPVC or wood/PVC offer a cost-effective resilient way to freshen a home. Cheaper than timber and equally resilient, they require no varnishing and little more than soap and water to keep clean.

Mr Charlton said: “Internal cladding for bathrooms, hallways and offices couldn’t be easier to install and is a DIYer’s delight. It is light and clicks together quickly and easily. It is a simple, very quick and efficient way to transform a home.

“The number of home-improvement magazines on the shelf, and TV programmes, show the popularity of refurbishment, but people don’t realise that many of the products featured come from abroad, are expensive, and are often subject to lengthy delays. Many of our products are made in Cumbria to equally high standards and are therefore much more accessible.”
