A NUMBER of roads across the district were flooded on Saturday after drains struggled to cope with heavy rainfall.
A combination of snow and heavy rain during the day meant roads were badly affected by standing water.
The Rev. John Harrison, who operates a weather station at Plunder Heath, Haydon Bridge, recorded 30.4mm standing water after 36 hours of consecutive rainfall between Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16.
Homeowners and businesses braced themselves in Corbridge and Haydon Bridge as the River Tyne looked close to bursting its banks.
Redesmouth Road, near Bellingham, was blocked at Nichol’s Arch; Sidgate in Newbrough was affected by standing water and Station Road in Prudhoe was also flooded.
The Environment Agency issued a flood warning for the district on Saturday as rain continued to fall. A statement said areas most at risk were riverside footpaths and low lying land, and roads near the River Tyne from Hexham to Wylam.
The agency added that its response staff had checked flood defences throughout the district.
On Sunday, conditions had improved, and river levels on the River Tyne began to fall.
Warmer weather is in store this week, according to the Met Office, with temperatures of 13 degrees due to hit Tynedale.
