FIRE crews were called out on a search and rescue mission on Saturday after five kayakers went missing in torrential rain.

Crews from Alston, along with colleagues from Carlisle and Brampton, were called out at 12.35 on Saturday after the five kayakers went missing near Alston.

Heavy rain had battered the district, leading to widespread flooding.

Ready for a swift water rescue, the firefighters took part in a search for the two missing canoes.

The canoes were found full of water - but the five kayakers managed to get themselves to safety and were all accounted for, safe and well.

After the rescue the Carlisle east appliance ended up with a flooded gear box, meaning it will be out of action until repairs are made.
