CONCERNED residents are uniting to raise fears of the potential catastrophic impact of climate change.

Around 60 people living in the Tyne Valley met to discuss ways they can reduce the risk of the global warming, and have agreed to form a group to share opinions.

Hexham Climate Action was started last week, with a subsidiary group, Hexham Youth for Climate, set up for young people in the district. A meeting of the youth group is set to take place at the Forum Cinema, in Hexham, tonight at 7.30pm.

Tom Sage, a leading member of the group, said: “We held an initial meeting and there were about 60 people, with a wide age range from teenagers to 85-year-olds.

“The idea of the group is to find out more about climate change and link to other groups such as Transition Tynedale and Extinction Rebellion to find out more about what they are doing.

“Why we want to get this going is because climate change is happening right now and it could be catastrophic if we don’t act right now. We need to raise awareness and find out ways we can help the planet.”

Future meetings of Hexham Climate Action are yet to be decided, but there are plans to give talks at Wylam WI and Wylam Men at Work Institute in the coming months.
