POLICE have spoken of their delight after a man was jailed for robbing a post office.

Last Wednesday, Stephen Jarvis (21), of Greenholme Road, Haltwhistle, was jailed for six-and-a-half years for robbery after he threatened staff at the town's post office on September 10 with a dirty syrienge needle.

Jarvis was convicted of robbery and possession of a bladed article at Newcastle Crown Court in October after pleading not guilty to both charges. He was sentenced to six-and-a-half years behind bars for robbery and 10 months for possesing a bladed article, to run concurrently.

One of the investigating officers, Det. Const. Stuart Evans, said: “This was a truly shocking robbery and the offender will now have plenty of time to consider the consequences of his actions.

“Incidents like this are fortunately rare but when they do occur they can have a huge impact on victims and the wider community.

“It is important the public knows we are fully committed to pursuing offenders and bringing them to justice.”

The court heard how Jarivs used a syringe needle to threaten staff at the post office on Main Street before taking cash from the till.
