A MAN who pleaded guilty to a string of charges following a robbery at a newsagents in Hexham will be sentenced in March.

Gary William Addison (36), who gave his address as St Helen’s Gate, Hexham, had pleaded guilty to robbery, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of assault by beating.

The charges related to an incident at Peggs News, on Priestpopple, on Tuesday, October 9.

Addison attempted to take alcohol from the shop without paying, before assaulting a member of staff.

Addison was due to be sentenced this week, but the case was adjourned.

He appeared via video link from Durham Prison at Newcastle Crown Court on Tuesday.

The case was adjourned until March so that Addison’s behaviour in custody could be assessed by a second probation officer.

Addison will remain in jail until the hearing in March.

Judge Penny Moreland said: “I have to warn you that the almost inevitable outcome of a conviction for robbery is immediate custody.

“You will remain in custody until March 14.”
