POLICE are still appealing for more information to piece together the factors that led to the death of Nigel Yue Bun Li.

The 32-year-old from Ponteland died after being hit by a car on the A19 southbound road between Seaton Burn and Moor Farm roundabout at 7.40am on Thursday, January 3.

Emergency services attended the scene after he was hit by a black Volkswagen. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speaking at a press conference last Thursday, police said Mr Li had been involved in a dispute with the driver of a white Ford Transit van, a short time before the collision.

They said Mr Li and the driver of the van pulled into a lay-by on the A19, where the two drivers got out of their vehicles. It is understood a disagreement took place and Mr Li ended up on the main carriageway before being hit by the car.

The driver of the white Ford Transit van (37) was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and has since been released under investigation.

Inquiries are ongoing to establish how Mr Li came to leave the lay-by and enter the main road. Police are hoping motorists will come forward with dashcam footage, enabling them to understand the chain of events that led up to the incident.

Superintendent Simon Hall said: “The van driver remained at the scene along with the car that was involved in the fatal collision. We have spoken to the person involved and they have given their account of what happened.”

Supt Hall confirmed that police were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, but that officers were “still very keen to establish the entirety of the facts”.

He added: “We are keen to speak to anyone who saw or has dashcam footage of the Volkswagen Golf or van prior to the collision or saw people in the lay-by.” He said the police had already spoken to several witnesses and had a “great response” so far.
