A NO deal Brexit would be a disaster for farmers, Northumberland county chairman of the National Farmers’ Union, Hugh Richardson has warned.
“With any divorce neither side wins and we will all feel losers, but the deal that was on offer gave a measure of security and stability for all businesses that we desperately need,” said Mr Richardson.
“It wasn’t perfect but in the circumstances, I felt it would have been a stepping stone to an exciting future.
“Farming and food production forms part of the largest manufacturing sector in the country.
“Especially here in Northumberland, with its heavy reliance on sheep and beef and our magnificent scenery and environment.”
Mr Richardson said he was disappointed, but not surprised by the outcome of Tuesday night’s vote.
He also said he hoped that Mrs May’s proposed withdrawal deal would be passed eventually.
“It’s frustrating having to continuously watch Brexit being kicked down the road for over two years by the government,” he said.
“It does make me lose trust in the country’s MPs, who are supposed to represent the British people, and what we voted for.”
