A CRASH on a level crossing which saw a train smash into a taxi caused late night disruption for rail users on Monday.

The driver and passengers in the car were able to get out before the train hit the car, which was was partly crushed by the impact.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene near Fourstones at around 7.15pm on Monday, but the British Transport Police said no casualties were reported.

Trains between Carlisle and Hexham were cancelled due to the lines being blocked, and replacement buses were running between Hexham and Carlisle in both directions.

The line was cleared and reopened shortly after 3am on Tuesday morning with rail services returning to normal that day. Network Rail said the crash has been reported to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch.
