WINTER is coming to Tynedale this weekend, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for snow and ice.

The warning, which covers much of the North of the country along with Scotland, is in place from 12pm on Saturday until 10am on Sunday.

According to the Met Office, 2-5cm of snow is likely at lower levels, while higher ground could see 10-20cm.

Blizzards and snow drifts may develop over hills due to strong winds.

In addition, snow may turn to freezing rain, leading to widespread ice developing on Saturday night.

The weather could cause delays on roads and to rail and air travel, while there are fears some rural communities could be cut off.

The Met Office is also warning that power cuts could occur and mobile phone coverage could be disrupted, while ice could pose a risk of falling.
