FOR helping England to silver at the Commonwealth Games, Hexham swimmer David Cumberlidge scooped the top prize at the annual Sport Tynedale Awards.

Cumberlidge, a member of Tynedale Amateur Swimming Club, played an important role in England's 4x100m freestyle relay team which came second in this year's games, leading to him receiving the Tynedale Trophy for top performer in the district at the local awards cermony on Sunday evening.

Winning the equivalent award for junior participants, the Ian Turner Trophy, was Tynedale Rugby's U18 team the Colts for making their way to the grand final of the England National U18 Cup.
