HEXHAM Abbey has come to the rescue for stallholders disappointed about the cancellation of the Hexham Christmas Market.

The team at the Abbey, which will hold its annual Abbey Christmas Fair between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, will host around 30 stalls originally planned for the market upstairs in the Great Hall.

The market was scheduled to take place on Beaumont Street on Friday and Saturday, but the decision to cancel was made on Wednesday after a weather warning for strong wind for Friday.

Owen Mills, general manager of the Abbey, said: "When we saw the fair had sadly been cancelled because of the weather, we contacted Hexham Community Partnership to ask if we could help out as we have a suite of function rooms here.

"It was a chance for the Abbey to help the town out and we are happy to do that."

The Christmas Craft and Beauty Fair in Hexham Trinity Methodist Church will also host some of the market's traders between 10am and 3pm on Saturday.

The Farmers' Market will go ahead in the Market Place as planned.
