A LONG-SERVING committee member of Hexham Community Centre has been praised for her leadership.
Ann Reed has stepped down as chairwoman of the centre’s board of trustees after four years, handing over the role to Hexham town councillor Steve Ball.
Ann, who will remain on the board, has volunteered at the centre for more than 15 years. The main hall in the building is named after her late husband Norman for his influential involvement over the years.
One of the most key roles Ann has played over the years is providing a Christmas day lunch so people aren’t lonely on the big day.
She said: “The centre is very important in the community to provide a place for older people to get help and advice, and for new companionship.
“But there’s a lot goes on at the centre and there’s youth clubs and an Ofsted outstanding play group, so it caters for everybody from three years to our oldest member at 101.”
Coun. Ball said he was excited to take on the role. “There’s a good team of trustees and a new centre manger, and we are hoping to continue the good work Ann has done,” he said. “We hope the centre maintains its prominence as a community asset.”
