THE work of town councillors in Hexham in supporting the community has been recognised.

Hexham Town Council was this week awarded the Local Council Foundation Award from the National Association of Local Councils (NALC).

Town mayor Tom Gillanders was presented with a certificate from Stephen Rickitt, chief officer of the Northumberland branch of NALC, during the latest town council meeting.

Mr Rickitt said just a handful of councils in the county had achieved the status, with Hexham being the first recipient since he became chairman three years ago.

He said: “It demonstrates and shows you have a base level of good service and a good community engagement, and that you are a working and achieving town council. I would perhaps give you a nudge about working towards the next level up, which would be tremendous.”

Coun. Gillanders praised fellow town councillors and the town clerk for their help to gain the status.

He said: “This really confirms our reach out to the community and the town council’s involvement in local activities which benefit all the residents.”
