A HALTWHISTLE grandmother has handed over a cheque for more than £1,000 to Macmillan Cancer Support following a charity abseil.
After Eileen Roe’s daughter bought her an abseil experience for her 77th birthday, the daring gran abseiled 40m down the side of Cathedral Quarry, near Ambleside, on October 20.
The charity is close to her heart after it supported her husband, John, through a short battle with cancer in 2014. Eileen raised another £500 for the cause by selling copies of her late husband’s poetry book earlier this year.
But after her adventurous abseil, Eileen said she had no future fund-raising plans at the moment.
She said: “We raised £1,107 for Macmillan – I only set the target at £500.
“It’s been absolutely wonderful but I think I might just hibernate for the winter now.”
