PRUDHOE’S annual town show saw a wide array of vegetables, baking and handicraft goods flood Prudhoe United Services Club.

Prudhoe Town Show has become a prominent event in the town’s calendar and always attracts a strong selection of entries – and this year marked the event’s 54th year.

This year 57 individual exhibitors presented 523 exhibits for judging.

It was the first time that Prudhoe Gardeners Association have presented the coveted Royal Horticultural Societies “Banksian Medal” which was won by long standing exhibitor Chris Celino from Hedley on the Hill for obtaining the most points in the flower, vegetable and fruit section.

Organisers said the show was a fantastic success with a wide range of exhibits on show from hand knitted items to home baking, jams and preserves.

This year, organisers changed the layout of the room, making sure floral displays filled the whole room with colour, rather than keeping to one area of the room.

Secretary Russ Greig said: “There were over 500 entries which is really encouraging, and there was a lot more home baking and jams and preserves than last year.

“There were certainly a lot more first-time exhibitors who came this time, which is perhaps because we have got our own Facebook page now, which means we were able to promote the event through social media.”

And a junior section made sure there was scope for competition for all ages with youngsters impressing the judges with their exhibits.

New classes for fruit were introduced this year with classes for plums, damsons and pears as well as new classes in the handicrafts section for photography and woodworking.

And this year’s scorching summer meant that exhibits of grapes, chillies and pumpkins had a highly successful show due to the warmer growing conditions.
