ALSO on Friday, Hexham and Northern Marts held their monthly sale of beef breeding cattle which incorporated three special dispersal sales on behalf of three well respected farming businesses with which the company have enjoyed successful working relationships for many years.

The first of these was a dispersal of 40 homebred Angus and Hereford cross cows on behalf of Robin Jobling, Mount Huly, Capheaton. A good crowd assembled at the ringside to compete for the increasingly popular “black baldies” with both spring and autumn born calves at foot. The best of these, both those with calves at foot and those that were in calf changed hands in excess of £1500 with the entire offering peaking at £1600 with outfits averaging £1387 and in calvers at a notable £1378.

The second retirement dispersal was conducted on behalf of father and son Bill and Billy Robson, Chesterhope, West Woodburn, who brought forward a useful commercial herd of mainly Limousin cross cows with ¾ bred Limousin cross calves at foot. A useful number of local and distant buyers were maintained at the ringside and were swelled by the support of long standing neighbours of the Robson family. Autumn calvers peaked at £1980 for a square 2010 born 3rd calver with a smart December bor steer calf at foot to see these average £1458. Whilst the spring calving portion of the herd were in better condition poor weather during calving and throughout the summer had hampered calf growth and in spite if this these sold well in comparison. Another 2010 born, this time a Blue cross led the trade at £1720 with a March born heifer calf and saw the spring calvers average £1306 per outfit.

The third consignment to disperse was that belonging to Robert Keenleyside, The Struthers, Catton and the Simmental cross cows attracted another set of potential purchasers to the Hexham ring. A smaller offering in comparison to those sold previously saw no less demand and this trade peaked at £2100 for a second calver with an older, well grown, Simmental cross steer at foot and an even split of autumn and spring calvers averaged £1430 to complete the trio of disposals.
