UP to 15 centimetres of snow blanketed Tynedale on Sunday afternoon as the Met Office issued a weather warning for motorists to take care in the conditions.

Even on major roads like the A69, the weather affected drivers and slow-moving queues formed as people tried to stay safe in the difficult conditions.

A yellow warning to "be prepared" for ice was in force on Monday as commuters and families tackled the journey to work and school.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "With surfaces left wet, from Sunday afternoon’s mix of rain, sleet and snow, icy patches are likely to form overnight and into Monday morning on any untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths."

Northumberland County Council said gritting teams were out from 1pm on Sunday afternoon to cover the primary road network, and again from 4am on Monday morning on higher ground.

But temperatures are expected to improve this week with a move to milder conditions.

A week of bright spells and scattered rain showers is forecast with temperatures reaching 11C by Tuesday, but nights remaining cold.
