WE shared the news with our readers that the BBC television licence fee will increase to £169.50 a year from April 1.

Here's what our readers thought of the increase and if they consider it to be good value for money.

Jan Brown said: "Definitely not and should be scrapped," while Julie Young agreed, saying: "Definitely should be scrapped, there's never anything good to watch."

Doreen Cochran said there are "too many reality shows", and Joyce Bunn said the majority of shows are repeats or reality series.

Ron Lewis said: "No, BBC One is not good value for money they show repeat after repeat."

Nick Pepper commented: "Broadly speaking I'd say the 'cancel the BBC' lobby are hankering after an era which never truly existed. Yes, the charter in the 1980s and earlier meant fewer repeats due to the funding structure and rules on royalties. But also a 24/7 media world did not exist."

He added: "I'm not saying it isn't a flawed organisation (show me one that isn't) but it is our national broadcaster, ad-free, and producing a vast amount of high-quality original output."

Paul R A. Mitcheson said: "Too many repeats. No original actors."

Anne Hughes added: "Don't watch live TV, don't record live TV, don't use iPlayer and save yourself the money."

Tony Webster disagreed, stating the licence fee increase "absolutely is" worth it.
