HEXHAM and Northern Marts held its weekly catalogued sale of 204 store cattle and suckled calves.

Even with plenty of crop making to be done, there was still 36 active buyers ringside that were eager for all classes of cattle. Trade would be slightly sharper again this week, rewarding those that brought cattle.

The older, more forward cattle especially took a lift and in the 23-30month age bracket sold to £1,490 for Angus x steers from Messrs PF Findlay & Son, Stoop Rigg, Simonburn.

Even though it was the designated ‘native breed week’, this didn’t deter Mr Robert Gray of Low Hall, Amble, entering a fantastic run of 19 continental bred heifers. Topping this fabulous run of heifers was a Charolais x selling to £1,515. Limousin x heifers sold to £1,490 twice with the whole run averaging £1,412.90, leaving Mr Gray delighted with his trade at Hexham.

Yearling Herefords x steers from Mr A Parker, High Wooley, sold to £1,290 whilst Angus x steers from JC Rutherford, Old Town, went on to sell for £1,180.

One of the day’s highlights was the annual consignment of Young Bulls from Mr JE Carruthers, Silloans. The Rochester producers, once again, turned out a fantastic run of cattle that were strongly competed for. Bulls sold to £1,600, £1,540 & £1,490 and went on to average £1,381.25.

More Young Bulls can easily be sold in this centre with the demand we have ringside with many Bull finishers going home empty handed.
