HEXHAM & Northern Marts’ first store cattle sale of April offered for sale a catalogued entry of 333 head - double that offered 12 months ago.

The sale was topped by a fantastic run of pure bred Limousin cattle from Messrs Dodds, West Grange, Milbourne, at 23-26 months of age which peaked at £1,590 for a hefty red steer. A seldom seen occurrence is for the top priced heifer on the day to originate from the same home as the best steer, however Messrs Dodds also scooped this accolade with a sublime female in the same age class that rose to £1,560 capping a great days trading for the family who sold eight, including just the one heifer to average a mighty £1,513 throughout.

The middle aged bracket of cattle from 11-17 months were also in hot demand and peaked at £1,420 for an Angus cross steer from Messrs Burn, Grange Houses, Stamfordham. The dearest heifer in this class was the first animal sold on the day; a sweet Limousin cross at just 14 months of age which heralded the lift in trade over the Easter break selling to £1,410 for a delighted David Dixon,Middle Heads, Consett. Mr Dixon sold three outstanding heifers on the day which came back at £1,343 throughout.

Once again, the youngest cattle took another lift and all cattle sold on the day under ten months of age averaged just £5 short of four figures selling to level at £995 throughout. The dearest steer at £1,235 and also the best heifer at £1,070 both coming from long-standing supporter and noted north Northumberland breeder James McGregor, East Loanend, Berwick upon Tweed, once again reaping the benefits of the short journey down the A1 to Hexham which paid off to the tune of a £1,132 average for two steers and four heifers sold on the day.

As demand rises at Hexham and spring growth surely has to make an appearance at some point, the auctioneers expect current levels to continue and invite entries for next week’s sale which will include the monthly special sale of native breed cattle. Contact the auctioneers on their personal mobile numbers or call the mart offices on 01434 605444 to enter cattle.

Following a great deal of work by The Livestock Auctioneers Association, as of last Monday we are pleased to welcome all customers – both buyers and sellers – back into the market providing they are conducting business and comply with the strict Covid guidelines in place such as continuing to wear a face covering and maintain social distancing.
