HEXHAM & Northern Marts held their third sale of store cattle in the month of March and offered a good catalogued entry of 437 head of top quality cattle consigned from Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria and Dumfries & Galloway.

Being the third sale of the month, the entry included over 200 head of native breed cattle which included Angus, Hereford, Beef Shorthorn, Blue Grey and South Devon steers and heifers for the monthly special sale of such types.

Trade once again lifted on the week and fittingly peaked at £1,580 for a huge Angus steer at 22 months of age from noted and regular consignor of Angus cattle to these special sales; Dennis Burn, Aydonshields. The Hexhamshire breeder also sold the dearest Angus heifer on the day at £1,280 and his four best averaged £1,425 much to Mr Burns delight.

Older, forward Continental cattle also saw a lift and these topped at £1,520 for a pair of cracking Limousin cross steers out of Charolais mothers from Snowdon Oates, Ouston Farms Ltd. The consignment from Trench Hall were sought after from start to finish and saw the lead pair of heifers reach £1,375 with 12 extremely well bred cattle averaging £1,337 for five steers and seven heifers throughout.

John Carpenter, another County Durham-based producer and weekly consignor to this centre saw his best Angus change hands at £1,505 for the super bullock at 22 months of age and the four consigned on the day, all by a registered Angus bull level at £1,406.

With County Durham consignors to the fore in this class, Messrs Herdman, Lunns House, Consett, attained £1,460 for their best Limousin cross steer, as did Messrs Walker Bros, Satley, Tow Law, for their best hefty Simmental cross. The two well-known families of consignors to the Hexham ring were well rewarded for their efforts on the day and averaged £1,408 for four and £1,418 for eight sold respectively.

The middle aged bracket of cattle, from 11-17 months of age, looked dearer on the week also and these types peaked at £1,380 for a cracking Charolais cross from Kit & Paul Dinning, Fallowfield. The Acomb-based father & son team continued with their weekly consignments of quality steers and sold 18 which included a Hereford cross at £1,190 to average £1,219 across the board.

Angus cattle in this bracket topped at £1,340 for a super pair of black bullocks at 15 months from Robin Hall, Kirkley Dam House, and heifers peaked at £1,300 for a smart Limmy lady from Craig & Nicola Armin,Tanfield Lane, with Charolais cross heifers selling to £1,220 from both Messrs Coxon, Hepscott Manor and Agnes & James Sinton, White House.

A super run of Angus cross yearling bullocks were consigned from high in The Coquet Valley by Chris & Janet Watmore, owners of Holystone Estate, and the well-bred types at 11-12 months topped at £1,230 to average £1,184 for a smashing load of 17 representing a lift of over £100 per head on the year.

Besides the sizeable entry of Angus crosses, a number of other native breeds were well-represented on this day which included Hereford steers at 15 months which hit £1,160 from Davy & Kate Dickinson, Chattlehope, at the foot of The Carter Bar. South Devon steers at 21 months scaled to £1,240 from John Moore, Wingates Wholme, whilst Beef Shorthorn steers ascended to £1,335 from Messrs Harrison, Peddar Hill, Longtown, and to £1,040 for a nice pair of heifers from Messrs Hodgson, Swinhoe, North Northumberland. A nice packet of Blue-Grey cattle were brought down off the Hexhamshire heather by Philip & Fiona Scott, Westburnhope, Steel, and these at 17-18 months sold well at £1,040 for steers and £850 for heifers.

Younger continental cross cattle were also in hot demand and this category saw Limmy steers to £1,235 from Messrs Nixon, Longlea, Wark, and British Blue cross heifers to £1,225 from another Hexhamshire producer; Messrs Lee, Harwood Shield.

The youngest class – those at ten months and under - looked the dearest of the day and these too continue to sell at a pace at Hexham. Messrs Armin sold the choicest Limmy steer at £1,200 with Ken Ridley, Allenshields, following close with a shapely pair at £1,195 and heifers to £1,105 averaging £1,131 for six steers and four heifers sold. Charolais cross bullocks in this class sold top £1,140 from Sarah Iveson, Cooper House, and Angus crosses travelled to £1,040 for a pair from Neil Armstrong, Ricknall Mill, Newton Aycliffe.

An outstanding entry of cattle sold well all day to return an overall average of £1,106 per head with steers returning at £1,153 and heifers levelling at £1,017. As the days lengthen and the countryside begins to change colour, thoughts will inevitably turn to turning out time.
