HEXHAM & Northern Marts offered a catalogued entry of 582 store cattle & suckled calves at their weekly sale. A useful entry met with a sharper trade and more buyers at the ringside with the overnight weather proving less challenging then the previous two weeks.

A trio of bullocks all from the one home held the top three prices of the sale at £1,480 and £1,440 (twice) all being exceptionally shaped and well wintered at Blackburn, Slaley, by weekly consignor at this time of year Mr Geoff Ogle who sold one more and saw his four average a noteworthy £1,417.

Two very well-bred sorts were sent down the North Tyne to Hexham by Messrs Bousfield, Low Stokoe, Falstone, and the pair of hefty red bullocks scaled to £1,440 and £1,380 at 21 months from the well-known upland suckler herdmasters.

The charolais breed was well-represented on the day and certainly sought after with big, powerful steers from Messrs Hall, New Houses, Hallington, selling to £1,430 to average £1,385 for four sold, whilst The Aberdeen Angus offering continued to attract a premium at Hexham. An exceptional run from Ken Sisterson, Newlands Haugh, selling to £1,410 for a pair of outstanding steers at 18 months and averaging £1,290 for 11 sold on the day.

Forward heifers and also the best end of yearling sorts were also in the ascendancy with a smart Limmy cross lady at 20 months selling for £1,400 from David White, East Uppertown, and a smart younger type from Messrs Moore, Highside, Kellah, scaling to £1,360 for the Haltwhistle-based family.

A super entry of yearling types made up the second half of the catalogue and these saw great rates, unrivalled within the county or indeed the region this week.

Cattle from 11-17 months of age peaked at £1,390 for a Charolais cross steer from Messrs Tweddle, Springwell farm, County Durham; £1,315 for a Limmy bullock with style and shape from Andrew Swallow, Dukesfield Hall, Hexhamshire, and £1,310 for a Blonde cross from noted purveyors of the Breed Messrs English, Brownsleazes, Wark, who also sold a stylish heifer at £1,275. Limousin cross heifers in this bracket sold to £1,265 from Highside and to £1,225 from Ian Oliver, South Brandon, Crook, County Durham.

It was the youngest class of cattle that truly rang the bell on the day; those at ten months and younger which topped at £1,330 for a sublime Bazadaise cross steer from Willie and Mark Longlands, Rusheylaw, Birtley, followed by a rare Limousin cross from Messrs English that rose to £1,210. A cracking pen of ¾ bred calves were presented by David and Sharon Robinson, Hawksteel, Allendale, and these peaked at £1,180 for a great steer to return £1,111 for four sold.

Dennis & Stuart Charlton, Whiteside, peaked at £1,170 for a great red bullock bred high in Roman Wall country and Micheal Reed, West Biggens, in Weardale, County Durham, followed at £1,135 for a shapely Dun coloured steer.

Another Haltwhistle-based family operation; Messrs Thompson, East Unthank, enjoyed a nice trade with great Limmy steers at this age peaking at £1,130 and heifers close behind at £1,100 to average £1,149 for five great sorts sold on the day.

Cattle bred with a dairy influence were greatly sought after and highlights included a super pen of Charolais crosses out of Montbeliard mothers from Messrs Willey, Broomfield, that peaked at £1,340 for steers and £1,320 for heifers to average £1,225 for four and six sold respectively at 18 months. Messrs Faill of Hedley West, Stocksfield, scaled to £1,065 for a hard working pen of four Charolais heifers from dairy mothers and Messrs Ivinson, Cooper House, sold dairy bred Angus cross heifers at 14 months to a top of £950 and a super average on the day of £920 for five sold.

The entire entry of steers sold to average £1,113 across the catalogue whilst all heifers marketed on the day came back at £1,036 per head. Any producer with cattle to sell in our region should contact our auctioneers to take advantage of the great rates attainable at this centre.
