Store Cattle
On Friday, February 7, Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle offered a catalogued entry of 315 head to another good ringside of buyers.
Trade continued on the same vein as seen recently and with a good show of quality across all ages classes many commentators considered them ‘dearer on the week’.
The sale peaked at £1330 for an outstanding black Limousin cross steer at 18 months from regular consignors to the Hexham ring; Messrs Cuthbert, Wingate South, Longhorsley who sold five superb bullocks, all of the same type and stature to average a well-deserved £1270 throughout.
Three separate lots of Angus bullocks from now noted producers from across the region figured highly thereafter. Two black steers; both at 18 months of age and both sired by registered ‘Rawburn’ pedigree bulls hit the now seldom seen store-ring figure of £1300. The first came from Messrs Watson, Holywell Farms Ltd and the next from Messrs Featherstone, Allendale farm once again highlighting Hexham as ‘the’ centre for the sale of native breed store cattle in the North of England and a fitting illustration of the values achievable before the dedicated monthly ‘native breed sale’ next week. A third black bullock from Philip Tomlinson, Sunniside, Consett also sold well at £1270 ensuring another of the company’s County Durham consignors returned home to the Land of The Prince Bishops contented with a good days trading at Hexham.
Heifer trade also continues at a pace at Hexham and this week saw the youngest class of females ring the bell with an outstanding black British Blue cross heifer at just 9 months from noted purveyors of well-bred calves Messrs Bell, Woodhall, Bardon Mill. Worthy of not only any show ring throughout the country but also the epitome of many modern day suckler herd masters ideal heifer replacement the sleek sort was the focus of some furious bidding and quickly travelled to the noteworthy figure of £1250 which led Messrs Bells consignment of nine steers and nine heifers at 8-10 months which averaged a commendable £1019 throughout representing a considerable lift on the year.
Following closely and far exceeding vendors expectations was a well put together Charolais cross heifer at 18 months from Richard Johnson, West Wharmley, Hexham which changed hands at £1235 and saw six ladies from the same home; three by the Charolais and three by the Limmy sell exceptionally well to average £1113 throughout.
First-time consignors of store cattle to the Hexham ring Messrs Annett, Widdrington Farm, Morpeth were well-rewarded for some outstanding commercial cattle sired by their own pedigree Limousin bulls and saw steers at 18 months return at a top of £1235 whilst heifers peaked at £1175 at the same age.
Charolais steers took a lift on recent weeks and two renowned producers saw this benefit their trade on the day. The first; James Herdman, Edlingham Newtown came forward with trademark sorts from near Alnwick at 13-15 months and a number of longstanding buyers dug deep to secure some of these best-performing types which peaked at £1240 for the best grey steer, £1230 for the best ginger and the run of sixteen steers, presented and batched in level lots returned £1163 per head average. Another well-known County Durham family of consignors to the Hexham store ring; Messrs Smith, West Shields, brought fourteen cattle by the white, French sire North up the A68 to Hexham and at 12 months these too found homes with regular purchasers that are aware of how well the Satley bred cattle can perform. Bullocks peaked at £1130 and an even run of six levelled at £1065 whilst eight of their heifers sisters came back a sound commercial trade of £871 across the board.
As winter draws on and daylight hours increase housed cattle will undoubtedly begin to increase their performance on a weekly basis and our auctioneers are keen to hear from any producers considering Hexham as an outlet at which to market their cattle. We have buyers for all classes that attend our weekly sale from all over the UK and as finishing sheds are steadily emptied these committed purchasers look to the weekly catalogue to replenish their numbers. Entries will increase as we work towards our special March sales and we would be pleased to visit farms to appraise your cattle in the lead up to these sales. Please contact the Mart offices on 01434 605444 to arrange and appointment.
