Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle and suckled calves had forward a catalogued entry of 305 head.

Following the great rates seen last week trade continued in the same vein and saw the sale topped at £1290 twice; first for a big black Angus cross bullock at 18 months of age from Messrs Watson, Holywell Farms, Newcastle. A smart Black Limousin cross steer at 20 months from Willie Patterson, Halton Red House also made the same money followed by a similar red sort at £1280.

Having experienced the top of the trade last week Messrs Moralee, Hard Riding brought forward another smart pen full of heifers at 18 months and these peaked at £1270 with a Charolais cross from Graham Tweddle, Springwell Farm, Tow Law changing hands at £1250.

Yearling types also continue to sell well at Hexham and once again Messrs Nixon of Stotsfold figured highly within this age class. An outstanding Limousin bullock topped at £1250 and their run of twelve returned at £1184 throughout at 14 months of age to complete a good days trading for the Hexhamshire operation. Heifers in this age bracket topped at £1100 at the end of the sale for a smart Limmy lady from renowned producers Willie & Mark Longlands, Rusheylaw, Birtley proving that committed buyers remain at the Hexham ringside for quality sorts until the days business is concluded.

The youngest aged cattle; those at ten months and younger sold well albeit for a smaller number forward. These peaked at £1000 for a square Limmy stirk from Barry Rayson, Salmonswell who took home an average of £913 for 8 well-bred sorts sold on the day.

Store Hoggs

Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly calaogued sale of 1818 Store Hoggs that met a fast and furious trade with store sheep being the dearest trade all season with numbers tightening nationally.

Topping the sale with an outstanding run of Dutch Texel ewe hoggs was M/s WR Sparke & Son, Little Swinburne selling pens to £148, £127, £116, £115 and £114

Bigger, framier hoggs dearer on the week with more than 70 pens breaking the £100 barrier.

Plainer hoggs were also easily cashed with plenty selling in excess of £82 and more desperately needed for next week’s sale.

Another nice entry of cows with more, leaner sorts forward compared to last week. This did not affect the trade with it being sharper again and all selling very well leaving all vendors extremely happy with their days trading. M/s TL Forster & Son, Lowes Fell topped the ppk twice selling two Limousin x cows for 145.5ppk. Highest grossing cow came from M/s K&HA Ridley, Allenshields Farm, who sold a Limousin x cow for £1158.89
